Pests definition
A common name for an animal or insect, which adversely affects the native animals and plants, and damage human property, health and well-being.
Rats
Rats are stout-bodied rodents, having long slender tail and dexterous forepaws. It refers particularly to the two species of house rat, Rattus norvegicus, the brown, or Norway rat and rattus, the black or roof rat. Rats are omnivorous, aggressive, intelligent, adaptable, and extremely fecund. Rats live often in and around human settlements. They invade food supplies, cause widespread destruction, and also spread human diseases such as typhus and tularemia.
Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are wingless insects, which move around by crawling or riding from place to place in clothing, luggage or other transport. Bed bugs are mostly found in bedrooms as they feed at night when the host is asleep. When not feeding they live in the bed frame or cracks and crevices around the room. Bed bug bites generally cause the victim irritation and can lead to sleepless nights, some pain and swelling.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches are the most common insect pests infesting homes, food service establishments and other structures. They are capable of mechanically transmitting disease organisms such as the bacteria which cause food poisoning. Cockroaches lives where there is food, warmth and moisture.
Mice
Mice are more common and cause more damage then rats. Food, clothing, furniture, books and many other household items are contaminated by their droppings and urine, or damaged by their gnawing. House mice gnaw through electrical wiring, causing fires and failure of freezers, clothes dryers and other appliances. Mice also transmit diseases, most notably salmonellosis (bacterial food poisoning) when food is contaminated with infected rodent feces.
Wasps
Several thousand people are stung by these venomous insects each year. In some cases, severe allergic reactions to the venom have resulted in death.
Ants
Ants are small insects that live in communities called a colony. An ant colony may be small in number or reach even millions of inhabitants. As a group, ants are the most difficult household pests to control. They are omnivorous, feeding on sweets, cakes and breads, and greasy or fatty foods. Nests are found rarely outdoors and almost anywhere indoors, particularly close to sources of warmth and water.
